    Hi,
I had a few queries regarding the J1 visa for US. To obtain the J1 visa, it is my understanding that MOH in Pakistan has to issue a Statement of Need (SON). For them to issue a SON do they need registeration from PMDC? or can I get the SON without all this ordeal?
This leads to another question. Let's say that I do need to be registered- I was reading the requirements for PMDC registration, and they say all foreign grads need to take the NEB exams unless they are in the third or fifth ordinance.

Now, Let me tell you about myself- I am a Pakistani Citizen and have graduated from St Matthews University - Grand Cayman Islands. The college is recognized on the FAIMER website Does this exempt me to take the NEB exam? or do I still have to take it?
This leads to my last question. What should be my next step? - Be in mind that my only focus is to obtain a J1 visa for residency in the US.

Any help or contact details of the concerned persons would be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    -Sameer

hi sameer and welcome to PFMSG
your question is similar to the issue here viewtopic.php?f=32&t=829 please see the discussion
according to the new rules, no one is exempted from the PMDC NEB EXAM. FAIMER listing doesnt make any one exempt from the exam too.
Your next step should be to visit PMDC with all requirements for registration and get eligibility to sit in exam

    Good luck
    Thanks

This is very sad.A Pakistani citizen who did medicine outside of Pakistan cannot apply for residency in the USA unless he goes through the hassle of getting a provisional certificate from PMDC because our lovely government will not issue a Statement of need (SON) document without it.
It took me one whole year for them to say that you are eligible for the NEB exam and now I have to apply for step 1, step 2 and step 3....... like the USMLE steps weren't difficult enough. "
And what if you took your usmles during your medical school? => well then after you graduate you apply for eligibility in PMDC and "one year later" apply for NEB step 1, then 2 then 3, and after that you may apply for residency in the USA. and then what are your chances of getting matched? ...haha, good one! :)

    Yay!

Thanks for making life so difficult!

there is no such thing as an exemption from the NEB.....If only they knew their own rules!

btw, every country in the world issues a statement of need very easily. some even give it to those people who are just residing there.
the most difficulty is seen with Canadians who did medicine outside of Canada because they need to take only one exam the MCCEE exam (NOT the MCCQEE) for them to get issued with a statement of need.
and the reason for that is they want Canadians to apply for the Canadian match as well and this information is in their website!

    Ya this is very sad
so it means any one doing MBBS from abroad must take SON for residency in USA, even though you have cleared all USMLE steps? It really is disappointing.
