Students from different universities get different time period till the exam as they come back to Pakistan after graduation. You need atleast 4 months to fully prepare the exam. But if you get a little time, go for the exam as you will get the experience, doesn’t matter whatever the result is.
PMDC format for step 1 includes almost everything for each subject. The only exception is Forensics and community medicine. For these two subjects, topics given there are enough to prepare for the exam. For other subjects, you will have to do almost everything.
Important books:
No need to study the gigantic books. Just stick to the review books which can also be revised easily very near to the exam.
*Read the community medicine book (either by prof. Naveed Alam or prof. Nauman Hashmi) thoroughly as many MCQs come from the community medicine.
*For pathology, study from Firdaus or Board Review Series Pathology (BRS), and you can rely on the topics given in the exam format by PMDC. For other subjects, not all the questions come from the format. So be ready to see few questions coming out of course (still related to medicine). Do the General Pathology complete. For systemic pathology, do whatever is given in the format.
*For physiology, Firdaus or BRS physiology are best books to study.
*For gross anatomy, you must do the upper and lower limbs complete. Small book of Snell’s clinical anatomy is good for that.
*For embryoloy, study from Lange or High Yield Embryology. Concentrate on clinical problems relating embryology such as neural tube defects etc.
*Neuroanatomy from Made Ridiculous simple
*Microbiology from Made Ridiculous simple
*Biochemistry from Lippincott or from any review book as many students find it difficult to study from Lippincot.
*Pharmacology from lippincot
*Firdaus for Forensics.
You can also get MCQs books from the bookstores, written by professors related to the university taking the exam. (e.g Dow medical university took the exam this time). Ask the book seller to give the MCQs written by Dow's professors.(Tasaddiq Concise Medical book series) These books are available for all the subjects and every book is written by different professor.

If you feel lazy to study at home, you can join any academy to prepare the exam. You always learn something new and can easily go through all the subjects in a teaching environment plus the tests taken by the academy gives you some experience. But remember it is not a must thing to do. Many students clear the exam without joining the academy, and many can’t despite studying from the academy. Now comes the day before the exam. You may get very depressed looking at the books. Just be relaxed read only the main points from the review books. Don’t try to learn something new now. Sleep well in the night.
On the exam day, you must be at the centre one hour before the exam starting time. You must have your computerized identity card (CNIC), Roll no. slip and two ballpoints (blue & black) with you.
First you are given SEQs question paper with 20 questions, each having 5 marks. Some questions have more than one part e.g. 1a, 1b, 1c. So write accordingly. If you are little suspicious about any answer, leave it and do the other ones first. One most important thing which most students don’t know about is their handwriting. Remember you are not writing a prescription. You are writing an exam. Try to write as neat as possible within that time period. Give headings wherever possible, with black pen/ marker and write the description with blue pen. You aim should not be to fill the answer sheet only. Answer to the question according to marks and with proper concepts...and thats exactly what examiner asks from u. You have 3 hours for 20 questions. That gives you 9 mins/question. So adjust your time accordingly. Drink water, go to toilet, give looks to your neighbors…that’s all upto you.
After 3 hours, you get a lunch break of about 2~3 hours. Lunch box is provided by PMDC, having Rice, Chicken piece, Salad, Juice, Salad, Bananas or other fruits and if you are lucky that day, you might also get a spoon. Do not feel low by listening to brillian answers written by your friends or other people. Keep up the enthusiasm as you need it for the next section.
Here comes the MCQs part. 100 MCQs, 2 hours, so 1.2 min/question. You are provided with a question paper and an answer sheet. DO NOT use any pen/ pencil other than the one provided by PMDC. The answer sheet looks like this;
You have to fill a circle A, B, C, D or E , whichever is correct according to you. Do not fill two circles in the same question, as it will be taken as a wrong answer. As there is no negative marking, so don’t leave any question unanswered. One important thing for students giving the exam first time,…if you leave a question unsolved for later, always see the corresponding number on the answer sheet to fill the circle for next question, as you might fill the circle for, suppose, 10th question but actually while doing 11th question.
The answer sheet has an extra sheet under it, with a carbon paper in between. So original sheet is given back to examiner and duplicate one is left with you to check your answers later on PMDC website.
So, that’s all about step I from preparing the exam to filling the circles for answers. Wait for the result, but start preparing for Step II soon after the exam. Even though you can only sit in stepII exam if you have passed the Step I, but you never know what happens, May be it’s your lucky day when the result comes. SO you get only two months to prepare for Step II.

*Go for surgery review by prof. Shameem and do the topics from the exam format.
*For behavioral sciences, book by prof. Mowadat H. Rana is a good choice.
*For Opthalmology, study from Opthalmology by Shafi M. Jatoi.
*For ENT, Study from Dhingra...or from ENT Review by Prof. Firdaus.
*For Dermatology, do from ABC of Dermatology by Prof. Tahir Saeed Haroon . If you own a CMDT, do the dermatology from there. Its relatively easy in CMDT than in ABC.
*For Gynecology & Obstetrics, Ten teachers or Arshad Chouhan or Terse all are good.
*For Paediatrics, Book by Prof. Pervez Akbar Khan is a good choice.
*If you r interested in reading MCQs, get the MCQ books written by Dow's professors... Tasaddiq Concise Medical book series

Step III: Viva / OSCE

Subjects: All clinical subjects
Timing: 15 days after the step II exam, in Rawalpindi medical college.
Eligibility: Only passed candidates in step II.
Type: Viva, Clinical examination, Written cases.
Exam fee: 10,500 PKR
Instruments you should be having: Stethoscope, Hammer, Torch, Measuring tape. Don't forget the overcoat.
There are 15 stations.(20 marks each, with 300 marks total) 4 stations for medicine, 3 for surgery, 2 for pediatrics, 2 for Obs & Gyne, and remaining for other clinical subjects. At each station, you are given 5 minutes. At some stations, you are asked to do physical examination on a patient, at some, viva is taken….at few, you get a written clinical case and you have to write the answer. If you don’t know the answer in viva, simply tell the examiner. DO NOT answer the questions by just guessing. Answer by confidence, but NOT over confidence. When you answer the first few questions correctly, examiner will ask you more and more difficult question.If you don't answer them, don't get depressed, as examiner will judge your knowledge from the first few questions asked.In between the stations, you also get free time for one or two stations
Do the General physical exam, History taking, ECG, X-Ray studies, Cranial nerves…and no need to mention that your concepts should be cleared to justify your answers in viva. For this step, Macleod or bedside techniques are good choices. Also do the instruments names from surgery, ENT, and opthalmology.
Do stress on APPROACH TO THE PATIENT, how to get to the patient, introduce yourself, take consent, take history and inform the patient before touching him/her for physical examination. These are the key points which examiner notes when he/she gives you command for any physical examination of a patient.
