GMMMC graduates protest against non- issuance of RMP

SUKKUR: Graduates of the Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College (GMMMC) Sukkur staged a demonstration here on Monday outside the Press Club against refusal of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) for registering them as Registered Medical Practitioners (RMP).

Hundreds of students are staging demonstrations for the last eight days to press for the acceptance of their demand. Representatives of the students said the future of more than 600 medical students was at risk. They alleged that GMMMC and the PMDC were responsible for frustrating them due to their apathy.

They said their registration as RMPs with the PMDC was must after acquiring their degree and completing one-year house job, while the PMDC was refusing to register them. This refusal, they said, would hinder their appearing in the exams of Public Service Commission.

Students said the administration of the GMMMC had assured them to get them registered as RMPs but failed to do so. Students said they contacted the PMDC registrar, who said the PMDC had imposed a fine of Rs20,0000 on GMMMC for each graduate of the college.

He said the Council would restore registration of the college only after the Sindh government paid the fine amount to the PMDC.The registrar also said that the GMMMC had not fulfilled the formality of registration with the PMDC.

The students, while saying that the apathy of the college administration created serious problems of putting their future at stake, threatened to go on indefinite hunger strike if their issue was not addressed.
