Four ex-PMDC officials behind bars for fake registration

Four former Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) employees are finally behind bars for issuance of fake or forged registration certificates to unqualified doctors. However, two are at large, this scribe has learnt.

According to an insider, among the four arrested are front desk officer Mazhar Mehmood, keypunch operators Mehmooduddin and Arifur Rehman, peon Mohammad Irfan Ahmad, while peons Aftab Mehmood and Waseem Akram are absconding.

He said the suspects were involved in issuance of fake or forged registration certificates to unqualified doctors from 2007 to 2010 without their qualifying the PMDC National Examination Board examination.

The insider said names of the six surfaced after an inquiry was conducted into the matter on the Supreme Court orders.

“The arrests were made in Islamabad after cancellation of their pre-arrest bails by the special judge (central).”

When contacted, PMDC Registrar Dr Raja Amjad Mehmood confirmed the arrests.

He said PMDC had got 47 FIRs registered by Ramna Police Station, Islamabad, nine by FIA Peshawar and seven by FIA Islamabad for action on the matter.

The PMDC registrar said he had formed a three-member committee in line with the Supreme Court orders to thoroughly examine the council record for finding fake registration certificates issued over the years.

He said cases had been registered against more than 60 fake doctors and that he had directed all members of PMDC staff to expose the culprits from within and provide the required documents to NAB and FIA for action against them.
