Xinjiang Medical University
Ratified by the National Ministry of Education in 1998 and entitled by Jiang Zemin, the former Chinese president, Xinjiang Medical University (XMU) was founded with the incorporation of Xinjiang Medical College and College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The former Xinjiang Medical College was formulated and listed by Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai as one of the 156 key projects aided by the former Soviet Union during the “First Five-year Plan” period and started recruitment in 1956.
XMU offers a wide range of eighteen undergraduate programs covering three major disciplines such as medicine, literature, and management through its thirteen departments and faculties, two teaching departments, five clinical colleges directly under the university, three detached colleges, namely, the affililated hospitals. It has three post-doctoral programs, four Doctor’s Degree Authorization Centers, five MA degree authorization centers of superordinate disciplines, forty –eight MA degree authorization centers of subordinate disciplines; five key disciplines at provincial level, one key laboratory jointly constructed by the province and the ministry, two key laboratories at regional level, ten research centers at regional level. Since 1998, the university has won 58 prizes in scientific research, which made it a leading university in the region.
XMU has 744 full time teachers, 815 teachers specialized in medicine, among which there are 286 professors and associate professors, 73 tutors of doctoral graduate, 525 tutors of postgraduate candidate, 63 scholars and specialists who enjoy special government allowance, eighteen regional outstanding specialists, two young and middle-aged specialists who were awarded by the national Ministry of Health for their immensive contribution, four specialists have been selected for “ Project of Numerous Talents”, five specialists have been elected “Famous Regional Teacher”. The school recruits students for undergraduate program from fifteen different provinces, cities and autonomous regions. As the first choice for students taking the college entrance exams, XMU has undoubtedly become a top university in Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.
XMU is currently forging ahead in the hope that it stays in the van of medical progress among its kind in China and top in the north-west, which is of great influence over the neighboring countries
